Anne Bonny’s screams of pain echoed from the medical bay of the ship as she went through the labour of childbirth. The ship’s doctor was with her, and Ah Tabai’s mind, although he would not admit nor show it, was somewhat insulated from all else but Mary’s passing.
He gently placed the palm of his hand on Mary’s cheek.
And found that it was still warm.
Ah Tabai frowned and warned himself not to get his hopes up too high. Perhaps it was just the heat from his own hand. He grasped Mary’s slim wrist and pressed two of his fingers against its side.
And found a pulse.
It was faint and slow, but steady. Like a weary but determined turtle plodding through wet sand.
